Chief of War

Jason Momoa’s Chief of War chronicles the history of the Hawaiian islands- with an emphasis on accurate historical representations of all peoples & cultures portrayed - including maritime life. I was brought onto the project to design, budget & build the rigging of a vessel based on Cook’s ENDEAVOUR; including spars, standing & running rigging, blocks, deadeyes & related fittings. I acted as technical advisor & sailing master during filming, advising Director and principal cast, in costume & directed 25 extras in proper traditional sail handling. I also made set dressing for European & American longboats, oversaw artifact & set dressing placement in ship interior sets, including historically accurate cannon rigging for 12 guns, performed sail repair to woven lauhala fiber waka sails which we made in Hawaii, & assisted conversion of a local vessel to represent a traditional waka.
